Family tree research has gained widespread popularity as a cherished hobby. Often, genealogy information remains confined to your home computer, limiting your ability to access it while exploring local records, graveyards, ancestral homes, or family gatherings.

GedView offers a solution to this challenge. With GedView, you can carry your entire family tree on your iPhone, iPod, or iPad, enabling easy access to all data about your ancestors and current descendants.

You can efficiently review family relationships, event dates and locations, and input new information. GedView goes beyond mere viewing; it facilitates capturing photos and videos conveniently without the need for an expensive internet connection. Users with an iPhone or cellular-enabled iPad can even document their current location to associate with specific events.

For family trees containing numerous images, GedView serves as a slideshow tool, displaying all relevant pictures related to specific events, individuals, sources, or families. Additionally, the app supports media playback for home movies and other file types that iOS devices can open, such as PDFs, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and mp3 files. If a user has an app that supports a particular document type installed on their device and possesses a related document in their tree, it can be viewed through GedView.

Are there unconnected branches in your family tree? GedView enables users to store multiple trees for seamless navigation between distinct branches.

Unlike some alternatives, GedView does not require a specific desktop application or a website subscription. Instead, users can import standard GEDCOM files encoded as ASCII, ANSI, ANSEL, UTF-8, or UTF-16 via WiFi, download from websites, use iTunes, or open them from other apps like Mail, Safari, Dropbox, and more.

Although GedView primarily targets GEDCOM 5.5.1, it accommodates all GEDCOM versions and supports various custom extensions employed by different genealogy applications. Thanks to its robust design considerations for GEDCOM support from the outset, import processes are swift and effective.

Additionally, users can export GEDCOM files to share with family members or fellow researchers and transfer new data to their primary computers conveniently.
